What Exactly is Eternal Life?

(John 10:28) And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
(John 17:3) And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

To many, Eternal life conjures thoughts of living forever in Heaven or living without death, pain or sickness and is something Mankind has sought after for centuries to thwart death and the degenerative processes of old age. i,e, "The Fountain of Youth". We have been trying to find or create the Fountain of Youth to prolong our lives through holistic, medical and pharmaceutical processes. The concept of Eternal life has many connotations and understandings, but what exactly is Eternal life?

For a long time we've tried to unravel the secret or understanding of eternity and have tried to fathom it through mathematics and numerous spiritual practices.

We've even gone as far as to create an understanding of existence with the concept that when we die we come back in another form, reincarnation. Is there a definition that can adequately explain this concept in a manner we can understand and comprehend? Yes there is and it can be found in the Bible scripture of John 17:3.

(John 17:3)  And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

But can it really be this simple? What does this mean? Again, as the Bible states, Eternal Life is the process of knowing and learning about who God is. God is infinite and in order to understand and know Him, it would take eternity to do so.

Bible Knowledge Commentary: John 17:3 - Eternal life, as defined here by Jesus, involves the experience of knowing the only true God through His Son (cf. Mat_11:27). It is a personal relationship of intimacy which is continuous and dynamic. The word know (gino¯sko¯sin) here in the present tense, is often used in the Septuagint and sometimes in the Greek New Testament to describe the intimacy of a sexual relationship (e.g., Gen_4:1, “lay”; Mat_1:25, “had… union”).

Thus a person who knows God has an intimate personal relationship with Him. And that relationship is eternal, not temporal. Eternal life is not simply endless existence.

Again, as the Bible states, Eternal Life is the process of learning about and knowing who God is. This entails understanding how He works, thinks and loves His creation..

A Quick Sidenote

So if Eternal LIfe is knowing God, then Death is NOT knowing God.  Isn't that what Satan has been trying to do over the span of Human existence?  Satan has cast an untrue view of the character of God by the many false doctrines that are taught in most of Christian churches today.

Satan has been spreading lies about God since before he was cast out of Heaven because he does not want us to truly know God.

Even with normal human relationships, it takes time to know and understand who an individual is. We are very complex creatures and we are made up of influences from our parents, our society and our environment, not to mention the era of time we live in. Even with a lifetime of communication, do you understand and fully know those closest to you? We only have a short life span to know others, and even that isn't enough to fully understand ourselves.

John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible Commentary explains John 17:3 this way...

... that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. The knowledge of God here spoken of, is not the knowledge of him by the light of nature, and works of creation; for a man may know God in this sense, and not know him in Christ, nor anything of Christ; yea, may know God and profess him in words, and in works deny him, as the Heathens did; nor is eternal life known hereby, nor connected with it: nor is it such a knowledge of God as is to be obtained by the law of Moses, in which God is represented as a righteous and incensed Being; nor is there in it any discovery of God, as a God of love, grace, and mercy in Christ; nor any revelation of a Mediator, Saviour and Redeemer; nor can it either show, or give to persons eternal life; and yet what is here said of the knowledge of God and Christ, the Jews say of the law

But this is to be understood of an evangelic knowledge of God, as the God and Father of Christ, as the God of all grace, pardoning iniquity, transgression and sin, and of Christ Mediator; not a general, notional, and speculative knowledge; but a practical and experimental one; a knowledge of approbation and appropriation; a fiducial one, whereby a soul believes in Christ, and trusts in his blood, righteousness, and sacrifice for salvation; and which, though imperfect, is progressive.

The Arians and Unitarians urge this text, against the true and proper deity of our Lord Jesus, and his equality with the Father, but without success; since the Father is called the only true God, in opposition to the many false gods of the Heathens, but not to the exclusion of the Son or Spirit; for Christ is also styled the one Lord, and only Lord God, but not to the exclusion of the Father; yea the true God and eternal life; was he not, he would never, as here, join himself with the only true God; and besides, eternal life is made to depend as much upon the knowledge of him, as of the Father.

The reason of this different mode of expression, is owing to the character of Christ as Mediator, who is said to be sent by the only true God, about the business of man's salvation. Nor is it of any moment what the Jew (f) objects, that Jesus here confesses, that the true God is only one God; nor does he call himself God, only the Messiah sent by God; and that the Apostle Paul also asserts the unity of God, 1Ti_1:17; and therefore Jesus cannot be God:

for Christ and his Father, the only true God, are one; and that he is the one true God with his Father, he tacitly suggests here by joining himself with him; and what the Apostle Paul says of the one and only wise God, may as well be understood of Christ, the Son of God, as of the Father; since all the characters in the text agree with him, and of him he had been speaking in the context.

Nothing will be better than knowing and learning about God. Knowing God will be an amazing ongoing experience, that will continue throughout eternity and imagine learning from the creator of all things. Knowledge and understanding will never cease.

Those who accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour will have this wonderful gift from God, Eternal Life. We will have eternity to learn more about this wonderful being and what God has in store for His children is beyond our understanding...

(1Corinthians 2:9) But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible explains 1Corinthians 2:9 this way...

... Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard: which could never have been seen to be read by the eye of man, nor the sound thereof ever heard by the ear of man, had not God been pleased to make a revelation of them; and though they are to be seen and read in the sacred writings, and to be heard either read or expounded, with the outward hearing of the ear; yet are neither to be seen nor heard intellectually, spiritually, and savingly, unless, God gives eyes to see, and ears to hear; the exterior senses of seeing and hearing are not sufficient to come at and discover the sense of them; flesh and blood, human nature cannot search them out, nor reveal them, no nor the internal senses, the intellectual capacity of men:

neither have entered into the heart of man; this clause is not in the original text; but is a phrase often used by the Jews, for that which never came into a man's mind, was never thought of by him, or he ever had any conceptions, or the least notion and idea of; so the elders of the city, at the beheading of the heifer, are represented not only as saying, "our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it"; but also neither"hath it entered into our hearts", that the sanhedrim hath shed blood (y); and elsewhere (z) it is said, this matter is like to a king, "into whose heart it entered", to plant in his garden, &c.

The things which God hath prepared for them that love him; in the original text it is, "for him that waiteth for him"; the sense is the same, for such as hope in the Lord and wait for him, are lovers of him; and the meaning is, that God has prepared and laid up in his own breast, in his counsels and covenant, in the types, shadows, and sacrifices of the old law, in the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament, such doctrines and mysteries of grace as were not so seen, heard, known, and understood by the Old Testament prophets and saints; and has reserved for his people under the Gospel dispensation, the times of the Messiah, a more clear discovery of them: so the Jews themselves own that these words belong to the world to come (a), which with them commonly signifies the days of the Messiah; though here they think fit to distinguish them, and interpret the phrase, "eye hath not seen", of the eye of the prophets: their words are these (b);

On A Final Note:

Eternal life also refers to a span of time that will  never end. Many Christians today still believe the lie Satan told in the Garden of Eden.  He told Eve that she would not surely die if she defied God, and she bought it.  Satan was saying to Eve, you will not die because you already have Eternal life.

(Genesis 3:4) And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Many believe that we have an immortal soul, but the Bible says other wise.  No where in the Bible does it say that Mankind is immortal, in fact immortality is an attribute of God only.

(1 Timothy 1:17) Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Mankind is mortal and will not obtain immortality until after Jesus returns with His reward at the Second Coming.  Only the righteous will receive immortality.  The Wicked will be destroyed in the Lake of Fire and will suffer the Second Death.

(Job 4:17) Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
(Romans 6:12) Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

(Romans 8:11) But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

(1 Corinthians 15:53) For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

(1 Corinthians 15:54) So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

(1 Timothy 6:14) That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

(1 Timothy 6:15) Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

(1 Timothy 6:16) Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

(Romans 6:23) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(1 John 5:20) And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

(Jude 1:21) Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

(Revelation 11:18) And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

(Revelation 22:12) And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

(1 Corinthians 15:52) In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

(Psalms 9:5) Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.

Do you want Eternal Life? The only way to receive this gift is through God's son, Jesus. If you haven't accepted Jesus as your personal savior, then please ponder what has been written here.
